What is a Spacer

A spacer is a medical device commonly used in respiratory care to enhance the delivery of aerosolized medication from an inhaler to the lungs. Typically made of plastic or metal, it acts as an intermediary chamber that holds the medication after it is released, allowing patients to inhale it more effectively and with less coordination.

4 Administer one puff at a time. Press the MDI once at the beginning of a slow inhalation as the inspiratory flow indicator moves. Use the inspiratory flow indicator to count breaths, maintain the seal for 5 to 6 breaths. spacer_6

5 Repeat steps 2 to 4 for each puff ordered by your doctor. Wait about 30 seconds between puffs.

Important Information

  • If the MDI contains a corticosteroid, rinse your mouth after use with water and wipe your face with a wet towel if using a spacer with facemask.
  • Stand or sit upright, and hold the MDI upright when using it.
  • Press MDI soon after beginning of inhalation to prevent the medication from falling to the bottom of the spacer.
  • Clean the spacer once weekly. When you notice medication build-up in the chamber, wash the inside of the chamber gently with a soft cloth.
