Emergency Care with Leading Critical Support
About Our Critical Care
Our critical care unit is designed to address challenging medical conditions in a supportive and highly specialised environment.
Every patient receives the dedicated attention they need through a multidisciplinary team approach. Intensive care doctors work closely with doctors from many specialties, including anaesthesiology, pulmonary medicine, cardiovascular medicine, neurology, nephrology, infectious disease and surgery. Together, the team provides patients with the highest level of care based on the latest scientific evidence.
Understanding Critical Care
What is Critical Care?
Critical Care, also known as Intensive Care, provides specialised, intensive treatment for patients with life-threatening conditions requiring constant monitoring. This includes adults with severe medical issues such as acute respiratory distress or major surgery recovery and babies needing immediate neonatal care.
Our medical experts are dedicated to stabilising these patients and employing advanced medical interventions to improve outcomes in a highly controlled environment.
Specialised Care Facilities at Matilda International Hospital
The Critical Care facilities at Matilda include an Emergency Room, a Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU), and a High Dependency Unit (HDU) designed for patients who require close monitoring and nursing care supported by advanced equipment.
High Dependency Unit (HDU)
We provide specialised care and life support for seriously ill patients whether they have undergone significant surgery, had complications during childbirth, or are suffering from respiratory problems, sepsis, cancer, kidney failure, infectious diseases or multiple organ dysfunction.
The High Dependency Unit (HDU) is equipped with cardiac monitoring systems and ventilators that closely monitor and support patients with round-the-clock care from experienced ICU nurses.
Many of our patients have complex care needs and we work with other teams and specialties to coordinate care whilst they are in HDU to achieve the best possible outcomes.
Patients are attended to by their specialists and are under constant observation 24 hours a day.
Special Baby Care Unit (SCBU)
Premature infants, very small babies, or those with illnesses requiring close observation may receive additional medical support from our four-bed Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU). The SCBU is a specialised unit within the Medical Surgical Department, staffed by nursing personnel trained and experienced in the critical care of newborns. They collaborate closely with the baby's paediatrician and actively engage parents in their babies' care.
The Matilda SCBU offers emergency care and monitoring for neonates, including breathing support via Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), feeding and temperature regulation using incubators, and active treatment with intravenous antibiotics. Babies requiring more intensive treatment or mechanical respiratory support are transferred to a government hospital. Should a transfer be necessary, the baby is transported to an incubator equipped with life support capabilities and accompanied by our skilled staff.
